Why the same strain can be totally different weed
You buy “Gelato” twice, from two shops, and get two completely different experiences. You are not imagining it. In cannabis, the name is marketing, not identity.
The name is not the plant
Strain names travel loosely. A grower can rename a cut, a shop can relabel a batch, and popular names get borrowed by plants that share little genetically. The same cultivar also hides under several names at once — on WeedYouLike, Auto Ultimate is literally the same plant sold elsewhere as “1-800-Cinderella-99 Autoflower.”
What actually decides how it feels
The real signal is chemistry: the cannabinoids (THC, CBD and minors like CBG) and the terpene fingerprint — the aroma compounds that steer whether a high feels bright and clear or heavy and sedating. That’s why we organise everything around the cultivar (its true chemical identity), not the label.
How to shop smarter
- Look at the effect profile and terpene fingerprint, not the poster.
- Check whether the shop shares a lab report (COA).
- Match how you want to feel, then see every name that cultivar is sold under.
Start from a feeling and let the chemistry — not the branding — pick the plant.
